A changing landscape in Thai Medical Insurance for Foreigners.

Minimum medical insurance requirements  are increasingly becoming part of the Thailand Visa application process.

Why? The Thai government appears keen to prevent situations where foreigners are residing in Thailand without medical insurance. For those without coverage, the chances of them racking up large bills which they are unable to pay is high.

In the following article we are going to take a deep dive and look at the requirements of the specific visas with regards to health insurance.

We will highlight the Thai medical insurance for foreigners and Expats that you will need in order to facilitate your Visa.

For those who are looking for a higher level of overall coverage we suggest you contact us for a detailed consultation.   We can propose plans which both meet the needs of immigration and provide a higher level of coverage. What are the minimum insurance requirements for Thai Visas?

Health insurance requirements for the O-A Visa.

The O-A Visa requires that you have at least 100,000 USD worth of cover,  accounting for 3 million Thai baht.

It’s also a requirement that the policy covers COVID-19.

Thai insurance companies will issue a certificate of insurance which confirms your adherance to these requirements.

Health insurance requirements for the O-X Visa.

The OX Visa requires that you have at least 400,000 THB worth of cover for inpatient expenses.

You are also required to have 40,000 THB worth of cover for outpatient expenses.

Health insurance requirements for the LTR Visa.

The LTR visa requires that you have at least US$50,000 worth of cover.   The policy must have 10 months of validity at the time of the Visa application.

If you are going down this route it is important that you coordinate with your insurance company so that your policy shows 10 months of validity when you apply for the visa.

If you have any visa specific questions, we would suggest you speak to Baan Thai Immigration, who are experts in this field.

        What are the insurance solutions?

You need to ask the question…  Do I need insurance to meet the visa requirements only? Or, do you want good overall coverage?

The 2 are not the same!

I’m not sure where the Government picked these cover amounts from.. But they are far short of the 10 million THB per year coverage we would recommend for those searching for Thai medical insurance for foreigners.

10 Million THB per illness, or policy year, is the amount we recommend for adequate coverage. This is based on known costs for serious accident and illness.

Solution 1 – A plan which ticks the boxes.

This solution will tick the immigration boxes and facilitate the visa.

We normally recommend AXA’s EasyCare Visa plans for this purpose.

These plans are designed to meet the requirements of immigration, in the most cost effective way.

Premium is reduced by using a high deductible of either 100,000 THB, 200,000 THB, or 300,000 THB. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.

In reality you’ll not likely use these plans, but they are an easy way of ticking boxes!

Plan 1 is suitable for the LTR and O-X visa.

Plan 2 is suitable for the LTR, O-X and O-A.

Solution 2 – Adequate and comprehensive coverage.

This solution is what we term “a real health insurance plan”.

By this we mean adequate cover levels of 10 million THB or above.

A lower deductible can also be used for those anticipating using their plan for outpatient claims. If you just want inpatient coverage, then a deductible is still a great way of reducing your overall premium.
