Why Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai offers Expats a great alternative to the intensity of Bangkok and the often overcrowded beach resorts on the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand coasts. Health Insurance Chiang Mai is commonly discussed in online forums as Expats look to get good value coverage for the time they spend in Thailand’s ‘Rose of the North”.

Situated in the North of Thailand, Chiang Mai is surrounded by mountains and National Parks. For those who love the great outdoors, Chiang Mai is a fantastic place to be based. The beautiful Doi Suthep Pui National Park is only a 10 minute drive from the center of town, and once you are in the mountains you feel as though you are a million miles away from the city. There are numerous roads and trails which make Chiang Mai a great place to be for cyclists, runners and hikers.

Development over the past decade means that for those based in Chiang Mai, there is little need to travel outside of the city. Chiang Mai benefits from numerous Central Department stores, leading international hospitals, an international airport, and thriving food and coffee scenes. Everywhere is easily reached but remember that Chiang Mai’s traffic still gets busy around the morning and evening rush hours. Whilst nowhere near as bad as in Bangkok, it’s still worth avoiding!

The main sources of employment in Chiang Mai are the tourist industry as well as a center of regional government.  The city also has a large student population thanks to the numerous universities which are located in and around the city. It’s worth noting that there are also some leading International Schools in Chiang Mai which cater for both Thai and foreign national students.

If you do need to travel down to Bangkok, then it’s only an hour on the plane to either Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang Airport. Chiang Mai airport now also has a host of international connections, meaning you can travel directly to many locations such as China, Qatar, Malaysia and Singapore without needing to transit in Bangkok. Chiang Mai truly is a convenient alternative to living in Bangkok. For those who enjoy a slower pace, there are regular train services down to Bangkok. Note also there are direct flights to the Southern beaches in Phuket and Surat Thani areas.

Do Expats in Chiang Mai need health insurance?

Chiang Mai has a very large population of Expat Retirees, attracted here by the low cost of living and convenience of the city. Over the past few years the city has developed as a center for Digital Nomads, who enjoy the benefits of the city whilst running their online and footloose businesses. The popular thoroughfare of Nimman is a particular hotspot for young entrepreneurs who like to spend part of their year in Thailand. The cost of living in Chiang Mai is lower than that of Bangkok, and combined with the laid back atmosphere, means it is a popular city for people to come and live in.

The benefits of having health insurance Chiang Mai are similar to the benefits anywhere in Thailand.  Given the abundance of great medical options in Chiang Mai, a good health insurance policy allows you to choose the best providers for your needs. For retirees, a good value health insurance plan not only provides peace of mind, but can also help you meet the immigration requirements for long stay visas.

How much does healthcare cost in Chiang Mai?

Seek2Insure deal with all of the leading health insurers in Thailand. Most have extensive hospital networks in place throughout Thailand, including the leading hospitals in Chiang Mai. This means that you can access health care on a cashless basis, whereby bills are settled directly between the hospital and the insurance company. This makes things much more convenient for you!

It’s worth taking into consideration that medical costs in Chiang Mai are now on par with Bangkok. As with Bangkok, minor outpatient visits tend not to be overly expensive. However, for those unfortunate enough to get seriously sick, or be involved in a bad accident, bills soon escalate. For these reasons we recommend our expat clients in Chiang Mai choose plans which will leave them well protected should things go wrong.

Premiums can be reduced by choosing plans which allow for focussed cover, without compromising on a high overall level of cover.
