Thailand Expat Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a selection of commonly asked questions relating to health insurance coverage in Thailand. If you have any other specific questions do not hesitate in contacting us.

Health insurance protects you against unexpected medical costs. People often fall into the trap of thinking healthcare in Thailand is cheap based on an outpatient hospital visit, which can be inexpensive when compared to many places globally. However, inpatient expenses can, and do, get very costly for serious issues. Health insurance provides the peace of mind which allows you to relax, knowing that should you get sick, you can be cared for at the best hospitals in Thailand.

Expats who are not employed or those who want health coverage in private hospitals can purchase a private scheme, either local or international. Expats who retire in Thailand will have to subscribe to a private insurance plan or pay the costs from their own pocket.

This now depends on the type of visa you hold. For those holding an O-A or O-X visa there are minimum cover requirements which form part of the visa application process. For other types of non immigrant visas there are currently no requirements for cover in order to hold a valid visa. Despite this, we strongly recommend all Expat’s have an adequate level of coverage for their stay in Thailand.

The cost of your plan in Thailand will vary depending on your policy, the company you buy it from, and what your policy covers. Other factors such as age and state of health will also impact pricing. Pre-existing conditions can also impact pricing. A good intermediary will understand your requirements before quoting on a plan. At the same time, one should be wary of people who quote a premium without having any understanding of your individual needs.

Some expats have healthcare provided as part of their remuneration package, but many will need to obtain health insurance by themselves. Many jobs will provide health insurance benefits, but how adequate these plans are is a completely different question.

The simple answer is no. Premiums are the same whether you go direct to the insurer, or if you go via an intermediary. A good intermediary can handle many aspects of your policy, creating value for money.
